Zoë Black is renowned for the emotional intensity of her playing, her commanding virtuosity and a distinctive rhythmic vitality that brings both precision and spontaneity to her performances. She moves fluently between solo, chamber and directing roles, shaping performances with a strong interpretive voice.

Her musical trajectory began early, performing with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the age of eight. She went on to win the National Youth Concerto Competition (1989) and the string division of the ABC Young Performers Awards (1991), before undertaking advanced studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with David Takeno and in Vienna with Michael Schnitzler. Her development was further shaped through collaborations with leading ensembles including the Juilliard String Quartet, Guarneri Quartet and Takács Quartet.

In 1993, she was appointed Assistant Leader of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, touring internationally and contributing to the ensemble’s collaborative approach. Deeply committed to chamber music as a living, collaborative art form she co-founded the Freshwater Trio in 2005 and the Imaginista Quartet in 2025, an ensemble which performs on raw gut strings and explores historically informed sound worlds with a focus on intimacy and shared musical discovery.

An influential pedagogue, she has taught at the University of Melbourne, Victorian College of the Arts, Monash University and the Australian Youth Orchestra, and is currently on faculty at the Australian National Academy of Music.
